My girls love to read and some of our all time favorite books are our Dr. Seuss books. The Cat in the Hat, Dr. Seuss’s ABCs, Fox in Socks and of course One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish are some of our go-to choices. My husband refuses to read Fox in Socks any more because it gets him all tripped up every time. What a tongue twister! Ava reminded me earlier this week that Dr. Seuss’s birthday is coming up on March 2nd. They must be talking about that at preschool because it certainly wasn’t on my radar. What better way to celebrate than with a fun and simple Dr. Seuss themed craft? Are you ready to learn how we made our One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish stick puppets? Here we go:

One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish Stick Puppets from Ava's Alphabet

Supplies

Cardstock in red, yellow, blue and green

Pencil

Scissors

Popsicle craft sticks

Tape

Large googly eyes

Glue

Printed out words – I typed the words into a Word document using 36 point Broadway font

Instructions

Begin by gathering your supplies.

Using a pencil lightly trace your child’s hands on each color of cardstock.

Cut each handprint out with scissors to make your “fish”.

Lay out the handprints to decide which direction you want your fish to face. The thumb should be down. You can make your fish reversed by flipping over the handprint itself or by tracing the opposite hand.  I had two of our fish point to the right and two fish point to the left.

Glue a large googly eye to each fish.  This is always the best part for my kids!

Cut out your printed words – One, Two, Red, Blue and glue to the appropriate fish. Don’t feel like messing with the printer? Write the words directly on the fish with a black marker.

Tape a craft stick to the back of each fish to create a handle. And there you have it! Dr. Seuss One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish stick puppets! Such an easy peasy way to celebrate Dr. Seuss’s birthday and to have fun with reading.

I hope you enjoy this fun little fish stick puppet project as much as we have. Do you have a favorite Dr. Seuss book? There are so many more great books that I haven’t even mentioned! What other fun ideas do you have for celebrating Dr. Seuss’s birthday? I would love to hear from you in the comments! I am thinking I might have to put together a round-up of Dr Seuss inspired ideas here soon?!? Happy crafting, my friends! Xoxo, -Cristina
