C is for Crafts: DIY Kate Spade Inspired Wine Glasses
I have a confession to make … I am totally obsessed with all things polka dot. And I also really have a thing for gorgeous glassware. I can’t get enough vases, glasses and bowls. Eek! So when I first saw the Larabee Dot Collection from Kate Spade I was totally in love. I was lucky enough to get a few of these amazing crystal pieces as wedding gifts. I treasure my beautiful rose bowl and tall vase. I have been coveting the set of stemless wine glasses that match but just haven’t been able to justify spending $50 for a set of four. So recently I decided to see if I could make some Kate Spade inspired wine glasses myself. Here is what I came up with:
Supplies
4 stemless wine glasses (I got mine at the dollar store!)
Painter’s tape
Scissors
Paper punch / hole punch
Measuring tape
Glass etching cream
Small paint brush
Instructions
- Remove any tags from your wine glasses and thoroughly wash and dry them making sure there is not residue left on the glass.
- Using your scissors, cut 1/2 inch wide pieces of painter’s tape.
- Punch a hole in each piece of tape. I found punching them sticky side up worked best because I could easily push any ragged edges out the front so the tape would lay flat against the glass.
- Apply the tape pieces to your glass in your desired pattern. I started with a row at the top of the glass and worked my way down. I measured down 1/2 inch from the lip of the glass to start and then placed the tapes pieces so that the holes were 1 1/4 inches apart. The next row I placed so that the dots offset with the top row and then I could follow the pattern for the remaining rows. You will want to space your tape pieces based on the size of the glass you are working with.
- After all the tape pieces were applied, I wiped down the glass with a microfiber cloth to remove any finger prints and debris. I looked over all the holes to make sure the edges were smooth and the holes were totally open.
- Using a small paint brush, I carefully applied the etching cream to each dot making sure to cover it with a thick coat but not getting any outside the tape. I let the etching cream sit on the glass for 4-5 minutes before washing it off with hot water. Be sure to follow the directions on your etching cream for best results. I found the etching cream at my local craft store in the paint aisle. It cost $9.99 for a 3oz jar and of course I used a 40% off coupon. Don’t be intimidated by this step – it is surprisingly easy!
- After the etching cream has been completely washed off the glass, remove any remaining tape squares. Some may have already rinsed off during the washing process. Wash the glass with dish soap and dry well with a soft towel. The etched spots with become more prominent as the glass dries. That’s it – you’re done!
What do you think? Pretty close to the real deal, right? The round vase with a pink flower in it in the image above is an actual Kate Spade Larabee Dot piece with my DIY wine glass next to it. At first I was a little annoyed that some of my etched dots were not perfectly round (perfectionism really is both a blessing and a curse- agh!), but in looking over the real pieces I found those etched dots are not exact either. I am very pleased with my DIY Kate Spade inspired wine glasses. The best part is that I will have no reservations about using these glasses outside all summer long. The investment was minimal and I can always make a replacement if one gets broken. Cheers!
